Ghost in the Shell Fails To Deliver At Domestic Box Office ($19 million) - Beat by Boss Baby ($49 Million) & Beauty & The Best ($47.5 Million)
Ghost in the Shell, set in a neo-cyber-punk Japan, from the acclaimed manga of the same name, had a disappointing box office - making only $19 million domestically. It had better luck internationally where it pulled in $40 million for a worldwide total of $59 million dollars. It cost $110 million not counting advertising to make.
That came about without two of the most crucial international markets: Japan & China. They are expected to have strong opening box offices. Yet even if true, it will be tough for the film to make the requisite twice costs to break even and spinoff a potential sequel.
